A daytime meeting in Canada put more pressure on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to change its tests.
Several people died because of air bags up to 200 miles an hour.
The three major automakers have been pushing for a 20% to 30% reduction in airbag deployment power, arguing that a weakening in airbag power means fewer deaths and injuries.

Domestic automakers believe that it is not possible to install less powerful airbags unless the government changes the test, which requires bags to be deployed fast enough, when a car hits a wall at a speed of 30 miles an hour, it can buffer a male dummy without a belt.
Automakers prefer to have a better approximate crash test in the real world, which is mostly less powerful but lasts longer.
